So I've been thinking about trying Linux recently but what puts me off is I can't really find too many videos on the likes of YouTube when I type in *(insert game title)* on Linux POP_OS" or something similar. I know Wine has came a long way and is raved about on Linux and j like the concept of open source and increased privacy. However windows just works out of the box and there's some good software for windows that might not be available on Linux.
Example, I sometimes like to dabble with Topaz AI video. There might be an alternative on Linux but I'm unsure.
What OS do you use and why?
Gnu/Linux - TLDR in my Signature)
Why: Gives me the Freedom to take control of every aspect of my operating system. I have complete choice and freedom to make any change. More importantly my whole system excluding games and kernel blobs I am running 100% Opensource machine. Gaming on My distro of choice iI achieve about 7 - 13 extra fps without FSR over Windows due to how efficient Vulcan is over DirectX and this is through a translation layer.
If Gnu/Linux is so good why dont you tell everyone to use it?
Learning curves:
Many Desktop Environments offer a Windows like experience, however it is guaranteed that this would disappoint many new users when it looks like Windows but barely behaves like it.
Terminology
Extra terminology makes researching a starting point difficult. Such as release models and the building blocks of a distro.
EG Windows uses a model called rolling release. On GNU/Linux its encourage for new users to avoid rolling release as like Windows this creates instability - though 10x easier to role back buggy software.
The Elitist's: If you have an issue there is a community that can and will make solving it extremely easy, however you will get force fed 13 different opinions while you at it. They wont just solve your problem they will tell you how they think you should be using "Linux".
Software:
When you find any piece of content telling you "Linux" is ready for desktop usage and you can switch easily swapping Photoshop for Gimp, or MS Office for Libre Office, or OnlyOffice, there is always the left out bit about these are alternatives not drop in replacements. Office does work through WINE, however they won't bring this up due to it not being open source. Many Adobe products like photoshop work through WINE too, though the setup process isn't trivial by any means.
Overall the biggest reason people avoid it is because the community is full of opinionated gasslighters who wont tell it how it is and when 10x opinions say 17 different things, it is likely extremely overwhelming.
EG. A new barrier to entry is the X11 vs Wayland debate.
To some it up to draw objects and windows on your screen you need a display server. X11 is ancient with cobwebs techincial debt and speghetti code, but for the most part "just works" - THe community is currently pushing 85-90% baked software as an alternative many distro's even coming with it as default. This new displayprotocol is supposed to replace X11, though if it were so easy it would have been completed years ago. The issue comes in this protocol says F convenience X11 is like windows and Insecure (Every program can see every other program, exactly the same as on Windows) . Wayland says nope, you need to be secure. And bc of this to make up for the fact that Program Windows cant "see: each other, there is a lot of extra development time and challenges users need to overcome. While you likely won't encounter issues that 1 issue you do encounter might just chase you back to Windows because "security". Yes its harder to write a keylogger for Wayland, but I can they not impossible. Most user aren't going out of their way to install Keyloggers or random software on the internet. You using your trusted Distro repo from your software manager.
