I'm no fun at the water cooler. Don't watch tv, don't own one, and haven't for over a decade. Can't tell you how much I love the peace of no commercials blaring at you day and night. Will never buy another tv.
That's the nice thing about downloading the programs from here - NO commercials.

By accident while looking for something else, I’ve just come across this old 1965 – 70 series: Get Smart. It’s a parody of secret agent shows. I’ve only watched the first two episodes so far but it’s hilarious. And bear in mind that I’m not amused easily any more.

I'm a big fan of an Australian action/thriller currently coming to a downloader near you. It's called Hyde and Seek.

As expected, they reflect the Italian mentality, including attention to food & drink, talking with the hands and an occasional touch of humor. They further differ from American mentality in being more easy going rather than full of dynamic action.
So far I’ve only watched the first episode of each series and I am glad to say that they haven’t been excessively grizzly.
I suggest them as a change from the usual cop shows.

Broadchurch Season 3 is already in episode 7 out of 8. A highly rated (8.7/10) Brit cop show, each story of which spreads over 8 episodes. Judging by the first two seasons and the high rating, it is recommended.
I had downloaded a lot of episodes of Midsomer Murders and watched several, but didn't know it's still continuing. I'll update my stock then.

Midsomer Murders is excellent. I have them all.
I bump the thread to draw attention to the OP Update with additions of recommended prominent Italian, German and Swedish cop TV Series (with hard-coded English subtitles).
Another British cop series worth watching is Death in Paradise. A (very) British inspector is transferred to a fictitious island in the Caribbean. But he hates the sun, sea and seafood.
I've only watched three episodes so far, so this is my provisional opinion. Though not quite up to the standard of Morse, it presents convincing clues for deducing the culprit and proving his guilt, which is not always the case in cop stories. A somewhat objectionable character(istic) that I find, is a smartass woman sergeant that I don’t particularly like.

Hemlock Grove on netflix great series... just started watching it
For fans of the classic who-dun-it scenarios, a good source is the old TV series:
Ellery Queen (1975-6), rated 8.4.
Numerous well known actors & actresses appear in the episodes, giving them an above the average quality.
The stories couldn’t get any more typical of the kind, and at some stage the viewer is asked whether he has guessed the culprit before the latter is revealed. But don’t set your hopes of success too high.

Thanks for reminding me of this series. I already had them on an old data dvd in avi format. Just put them on the computer and recoded them to mkv so I can stream them to my big TV in the living room.

So I've just finished watching the 6 epis of Bodyguard, another highly-rated British cop series by the same author as Line of Duty above.
Bodyguard (2018- ) 8.5
The hero is a war veteran sergeant, acting as bodyguard to the Home Secretary, who gets mixed up in a political, police and intelligence intrigue. The series ends with a cliff-hanging scene and a couple of twists.

Some may say that it lacks adrenaline excitement, but I find that it preserves my nerves and peace of mind, so that I can go to sleep after watching it, without being disturbed by cliffhanging situations.
On the negative side of this production, I don’t think much of the choice of Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) to portray the hero. The French (Swiss) production was far more convincing in this respect.

The first season has aired so far, consisting of 4 double episodes of about 90 min duration, shot in Havana, Cuba.
The series is in colloquial Spanish with hard coded English subtitles. But those learning Spanish might better not rely on it, as it doesn't use the best language version, while even those fluent in Spanish may still find some use for the subtitles.
The hero is a rough cop (lieutenant), not averse to smoking, drinking, using strong language, causing trouble and falling for women. But he’s dedicated to his work.
And a warning: The series uses some strong language and contains nudity/sex scenes.
One aspect I liked, it provides some interesting insight into the different world of Havana, Cuba.

Not for those who like a happy ending, or any ending at that.
As for the plot, it’s a futuristic sci-fi space travel story, where the 6 spaceship crew members struggle in risky adventures against unlikely adversaries, while at the same time trying to find out who they really are.
It’s probably a sign of the times that the female characters are dominant and usually physically stronger than the males, something not appealing to my masculine chauvinism. But otherwise quite watchable, as far as it goes.
