I reckon they've altered the stuff that you can put on windscreens. A lot of car washes have it...once the car is washed its lightly sprayed with a water repellent, the water just runs of like beads....

Good thinking Chea. I suppose the answer is that a new invention is now needed of something that makes materials permeable to water so that they can get wet for cleaning. 
Or, one hopes, if water including sweat can’t get at them, they’ll never get dirty…

Scotchguard has been doing this for years.
An example is hydrophobic sand (Magic Sand):
Sand + Tray + Scotchguard + Water = Dry Sand.

Well so far it is crap, it is recomended to use on new things only, if it is already worn and used not really works, as i did on a toilet brush
also as said in the discripition you should repeat the treatment after a while since when you se is the protection gets off again
you definitely should pray in on outside, or you don't live to see the result.
i will not buy new things what i don't need, just to see it didn't work
