Hannah Smith, 14, was found hanged in her bedroom in Leicestershire, after being taunted on the Latvian-based social network Ask.fm in a case that has shocked Britain.

She suffered months of abuse from trolls on Ask.fm who repeatedly urged her to kill herself, cut herself and ‘drink bleach’.

Ask.fm says it does not take full responsibility for what is on its site and does not monitor posts. But the incident has led to advertisers leaving them in droves, as Specsavers, BT, Vodafone and Laura Ashley withdrew from website.

The Latvian-based site makes around £5million each year in advertising aimed at its 60million registered users, but has been linked to a string of teenage suicides including that of 14-year-old Hannah Smith last Friday.

PM David Cameron also urged parents and teenagers to avoid using the ‘vile’ websites.

Something really should, starting with parents monitoring their children's online activity, especially at age 14. Now as they approach 16 and 17 I'd give them a little freedom but 14??? Come on parents

I'm not even married or have kids and know better.

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

Poor girl, how could her parents , freinds or teachers not have noticed the torment she must have been going through..

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

What suddens me most is that girls who react this way are the nice, sensitive ones. The tough bitches don't give a damn and survive to spoil the life of others.

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

Why did she keep going back?
Once you get attacked you don't go back.
They were not her friends.
This sort of thing just makes my blood boil.

All our computers are in family zones and you can't access the internet without someone knowing.

The trolls.
Ask.fm
Her parents.
Her.
are to blame in this order.

Her parents should sue and try to get the IP address of the trolls.
Then track them down and have them charged in Britain with what ever laws can be thrown at them.

Just that part 1 thing came to mind.

Women in abusive relationships. Still wonder why they stay, even they do not answer why.

I'm sorry 5ISAB but monitoring your child's internet is not that hard.
I don't find it daunting at all.
Mr 13 and Miss 8 both suffer the same settings.
All computers in family areas.
All social media (Farcebook, Twatter and the like) are banned.
Both the MacBook and the PC have keyloggers installed which save every keystroke.
The kids both know this so they don't do anything that will get them in trouble.
They both know it is not just about checking up on them but for their safety.
As Mr 13 grows his setting will change but the keylogger will stay.

So I do blame the parents for not actively knowing what their daughter was doing and where she was going.

I agree, i watch my sons internet activity like a hawk, also i find it very very strange how her folks never noticed any mood change or depression. she must have been going through hell, and for her friends and family not noticing this.......

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

saw that shared by a friend. that's sad.
I seriously will teach my children not to give a damn. :/

If it's not the bullies on the internet, it's the bullies at school or even at work that can drive someone to take their own life regardless of age or gender.
This is indeed a fact. Bullying, like stress, cannot be avoided, sooner or later one has to deal with it, and on many occasions. So it seems to me that the only solution is for the parents to take care early on so that their kids don't become too sensitive and vulnerable. Otherwise they're poorly equipped to deal with real life. But how parents can achieve this, I don't really know.

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

This sounds harsh but as a parent you have to learn how to bully your kids.
In small ways and then give them a cuddle.
If they do something wrong, yes, yell at them.
Then explain what they did wrong and how not to do it again.
(ie. Last night I threatened to delete all Miss 8's DS games from her DS if she didn't shut up and eat her dinner.)
I would have followed through with it too. The only thing is I have a complete backup of all the games and saves she has so at some point I would have put them back but I didn't have to.
She had a small cry, ate her dinner and I gave her a cuddle when she was finished.
Even every once and a while give them a smack if it is needed.
Showing tough love at times followed by soft love will teach them how to deal with bullies even if they don't realise it.

Too many parent don't show enough of anything to their kids and their kids know that their parents don't really care.
I had those sorts of parents and that why my sister is dead but my parents don't even realise it's their fault the road she took.
I on the other hand worked out right from wrong regardless of my parents lack influence.

So the fact that neither of her parents noticed anything doesn't surprise me.
The fact her friends didn't does. :(

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

By coincidence, there’s another similar sad case today.

Mail Online, Friday, Aug 16 2013

Teenager, 17, kills himself after blackmailers trick him into thinking he is on Skype with a girl his own age then threaten to send video of the conversation to his family and friends
Daniel Perry, 17, was ordered to pay money after conversation was hijacked

Furthermore,
“Child welfare charities have warned that they are getting dozens of calls every week from suicidal children as young as 11 caught in the same trap.”

Seems a nice kid

It’s becoming a plague and something has to be done about it. The web is full of evil of many kinds: malware, phishing, blackmailing and can result in young people taking their own lives. Yet, all authorities care about is paying intellectual rights on music and movies. You dodge those and they’ll invade your house, confiscate your equipment and put you in prison.

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

2 blokes played a trick on another bloke and set him up with a date with a non existant woman...he travelled about 300 miles to meet her. To find out it was all a trick...there are some seriously sad people around that find doing this stuff amusing

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

A bloke around the corner had his fence and letter box kicked in.
The teenagers were caught after he saw them walking to school a week or so later.
He had them charged and when it went to court he offered them both a plea deal to drop the charges.
He wanted to go into their houses and smash something of theirs with a hammer.
Neither one took up the offer and now both have to pay this bloke and the neighbour for the repairs on the fence and do 20 hours of community work.

I think he should have been allowed to smash something anyway.

Same with these aholes who prey on kids.
A bullet to the heads of a few of them and they would stop.

Hey a bullet to the heads of most people like this would be a great solution. :)

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

I blame the parents, but kids too. Is it too hard to close the account on ask.fm? Ask.fm can not check every conversation. An investigation showed that she sent those messages from her IP, so no one actually had the conversation with her.

Re: Brit girl commits suicide after being trolled on social

Is it too hard to close the account on ask.fm

there is a fb website set up that is trying to push for the closure of ask.fm so far fb have done nothing to stop it. Because the ask.fm is being run from east europe/russia there is no legal jurisdiction over it when it comes to EU. They all know its happening and no one wants to do anything about it. There have been multiple cases of bullying from that website over the last yr or so...but it all boils down to money doesn't it and lack of responsibility of the owners
