1080p VS 720p

Object of this topic is to ascertain what movie format most people (prefer to) download. It’s not just of academic interest, but may also guide uploaders.

So, do you think 720p is good enough in most cases, or must it be 1080p even at the price of a bigger file and longer download, even possible jerky play motion?

Of course, to some extent it also depends on your monitor. What kind and resolution do you have?

On purpose, and to keep matters clear, I don’t include a “Don’t know / Don’t care” option, because those who feel like that should really vote for 720p.

In my case, 720p is just fine, I hardly notice any difference or care about it, and I delete the movie as soon as I’ve watched it. And I’m talking about DVD rips, because Cam and TS aren’t worth even the 720p.

I have a 55" HDTV and BlueRay. So movies we really like we get in BR when the price comes down. Sometimes a BR or 1080 d/l looks outstanding, vibrant, clear and sometimes it is meh... I don't bother with Cam/TS either, but will grab a DVDScr. Bandwidth dictates my d/l choice to 720 or even 480.

I download 1080p from TL, i play on my Sharp 60" Aquos from a SSD drive.


If its something my kids want to watch, its DVDRip

It depends on the bitrate available and upscaling...There isn't enough justification at the moment to download a film that is above 720p.
Playing a 1080p Vs a 720p BluRay I can only notice a tiny visible picture superiority.

Here is the film 'Epic' on Blu Ray running at the different resolutions:

As you can see there is a slight difference in bitrate on the 720p screenshot.
The face seems to have pixels on relating to a lower resolution and therefore lower bitrate.
However when taking into account the detail, and that the was a freeze frame in motion the 720p isn't too far behind in terms of quality.

urm err eee aaaah oooooh....1080p is pretty pointless especially at the size of the files. I can quite happily recode/encode a 720p if necessary. But then most of you that know me, know I am quite capable of doing stuff to a film anyway...Step Up 3D V3 EMS...was one of those films, in fact the only really good Audio & vid TS out at the time So I guess a good 720p Mp4 on my samsung screen looks pukka I don't think its necessarily about the 720p or 1080p but the coding of the film thats more important....I won't touch AVI anymore unless I have no choice as the files are too large @ 700Mb....thats just silly, especially when you can get a 720p for less

As long as the film is DVD quality or better, I am fine with that - I am patient man so I can download things overnight, I don't need to be watching a movie 10 minutes after i started downloading it so I am not scared of a movie that's a few gigs in size.

But.... It seems like many uploaders have switched to ONLY uploading movies that are HD (new ones anyhow) - which is fine by me.... perhaps DVD quality is on its way out the door as resolutions even better then 1080p are being developed....

I voted for 720, but I'm happy with 480 or even DVD quality as I watch most of them on the computer which has only a 17" screen.

I went with 720p but a decent BR Rip or even DVD rip is good enough.
I watch a movie and enjoy it. Once you reach a certain quality anything better doesn't really make much of a dif to my eyes.

I say Neither , I download dvd rip , watch the movie then delete it

720p. I don't have a big screen. I watch most of the videos from my 13inch Macbook Pro or on the iPad. Both have a beautiful screen even though it isn't big. I love watching on it and 720p does the job. Also 720p has a smaller size and my internet connection is really poor.

looking at the file size and quality. 720p is my choice. why get 1080p and waste a few minutes on download, specially after my ISP kicked me to 2mbps from 8mbps :'(

480. Don't care about video quality. Bad audio quality is what bothers ME. I never wear my glasses when I watch movies anyway so it all looks like 160x240 to me.
