The State of Confusion
A lodge brother just sent me an e-mail. His company is in the process of upgrading from an IBM-z14 server to a z16, and wanted to know if I would enjoy their old one (like who wouldn't!). He said that between himself and his two son's they could get it into the basement, where it is nice and cool. It has it's own battery backup that will last about an hour, to do a shut down, but with my home generator, the battery will only need to be used for 10 seconds or less. It runs on a version of UNIX, so there would be no compatibly problems with any of the computers in the house. With 50tb of storage, it would be like having my own private cloud. Of course I wrote him back and said yes, so I guess now I will just wait until he can get it over and do the setup.

This? Someone's... just... giving... you... this?? 😲 Where, when can I join this lodge?

I will be glad to tell you what lodge, but for this kind of gift, you will have to have saved his butt in a firefight, had his back through thick, thin, and a couple of IRS audits, and known him for 70 years more or less.;)

I haven't known anyone for 70+ years... I'm barely part of the half-century group of mugs. That is pretty awesome though... as my wife would have my head if I ever thought about bringing such a beast home. Enjoy it to the fullest. :)

Mine, if she was still alive, God Rest her soul, would be ecstatic, knowing it would be another way to assure I would be at home more. But then again, if she were still with me, I would not be active in the lodge, and would be driving her nuts to install an elevator so I could get to the basement, where my huge train layout was (after she left me, I donated the 40x60 HO layout to a local train museum).

where my huge train layout was

When I lived with my brother for a short time, we decided to do a train setup... N-guage, about hundred or so sq ft. After he got married, it was tossed...

Anywhooo... wanted to check in, see if you got your new toy yet?

I'm only just over half a century, never had anyone's back in the forces but I've always had peoples back when in civvy street, done things voluntarily for others or charged them well under the going rate. I'd like to think that all the clients I've had over the years, we, together, have made their lives a little better. I've had quite a few thank yous out there in the real world. I would do the same with those I know here...or know a little bit. I've stopped and helped motorists get back on the road for nothing, including Christmas day :) Good job I had my tools with me :D
