Normally, the Windows 10 Xbox app offers only Low, Medium, or High settings, but a Very High Quality option can be unlocked by editing a config file.
With the launch of Windows 10 at the end of last month came the advent of Xbox One to PC game streaming through Windows 10's Xbox app.
Normally, the Xbox app offers three quality options for streaming: Low, Medium, or High. But, as publicised by Reddit user OomaThurmann, there's also a Very High setting that can be activated by altering one of the app's config files.
Specifically, you need to edit the "userconsoledata" file in the Xbox app folder (which is under C:Users%USERNAME%AppDataLocalPackages by default), and change the "IsInternalPreview" variable from "false" to "true". The tag name suggests that the Very High setting is part of some form of early testing, and could be rolled out at a later date as a standard feature of Windows 10.
According to Digital Foundry, the Very High setting appears to transmit a full 1080p display, rather than scaling up lower-resolution streams like the other settings (even High) do. The trade-off is a marked increase in bandwidth - a consistent 18mbps, says Digital Foundry - which means you'll need a robust home network to make the most of this setting.
