What is the optimum size of a video file?

A previous survey showed that the majority of people go for 720p or 480p videos, which provide a good compromise between quality, file size and playability. This poll looks at the subject from the aspect of video/movie file size.

Some people go for HD video and don’t mind big files because they have flatrate broadband connection and premium accounts.

Others have bandwidth limitations and low download speeds as free users. They clearly prefer smaller, if necessary recoded and compressed video files.

But at the same time, excessive compression will deteriorate quality, while using the highly efficient size-reducing codecs places high demands on system resources and can be unplayable on some devices.

So, to guide video uploaders, what do you consider a desirable size? To make figures meaningful they should be expressed in relation to video duration, say per hour video. As an example, a 40min TV show of 500MB corresponds to 750MB per hour.

I think 1GB/Hr is sufficient; and therefore constitutes a maximum size for me.

.5-1GB/Hr is for stuff I want to keep if/until I obtain a BR disc.

.3GB/Hr is for stuff I watch and delete - especially TV stuff.

optimum? as far as what? From a downloaders point of view I just want the movie to look decent and download quickly. Its very rare that I download a movie and find the quality unacceptable. (unless its a CAM but then I know what to expect) On some other forums I have seen movies that are 30 gigs long that have to be downloaded in 30 parts with 30 links and I shake my head because I know I can get the same movie somewhere else with just one link and it will look good.

But I agree with Niman on the format - I prefer MP4 because they can be transferred onto an Iphone without having to convert it and also onto PLEX (for those who dont know what PLEX is, - ya know how some newer TVs have internet options like netflix and pandora? well for TVs that don't you can get a roku box or apple TV that lets your main TV have those features - PLEX is one of the cool features the Roku box comes with, it lets you drop any movie or TV show in the PLEX folder on your PC and you can then watch it on your living room TV.. but PLEX only accepts MP4 format.. not sure why.. )

Perhaps some of you are "tech nerds" - you just have to have the highest quality and the best resolution because you are into that sort of thing.. but for me.. as long as the movie is DVD quality or better.. and is under a few gigs in size.. I am happy

I like 500/hr. Most movies are 90 minutes or so and that would make them around 750 - just right to fit 6 on a data DVD.

I tend to go for about a Gig for a decent 720p BluRay quality X264 MP4 usually of the YIFY Movie variety.

avi is dead to me and I only download an avi if I cannot get an MKV or MP4 version of a movie/ TV show.

eatmyshits knows how fussy I am when it comes to quality.

I'll let you into a lil secret...YIFY have a habit of recoding Scorp movies I, on the other hand am quite capable of recoding a film with as good a quality as either of them but from other sources and I believe there is proof of this dotted about the virtual reality world of warez

I agree, I've seen the difference in YIFY releases I've downloaded in the past.
