Back in the 1980's, I owned a car which was a (1960's) 2 stroke, 741cc engine... it was, sort of, a collectors item car at the time, but I put a Stromberg carburetor on it and ....

...it hit 90MPH on the motorway.... sadly, the motor blew up some time after I sold it because the idiot I sold it to forgot to mix oil with the petrol (gas) when filling it up....

it was called a DKW, das Kline Wunder.... German for THE LITTLE WONDER.... the model name was "Junior"....

It had 5 circles as the logo... they changed their name soon after to ..... BMW ...

Right now.... I own a 1985 Toyota Corolla Hatchback.... this car is a legend all over the world...

Its had a fortune spent on the engine... and I'm in the process of doing up the interior and the body....

Again, here is a google photo of the car... I would take a photo of mine but its 11:40pm and I'm not about to go out to the garage to take a photo...

Its a legend because it keep on going no matter what, a very reliable workhorse which can take licking but keeps on ticking....

Though I’m not off topic, I’m anti topic in a sense, because I’ve always chosen widely used models, to ensure finding spare parts and experienced mechanics. Also, if they’re popular, they can’t be too bad.

But I agree that hatchbacks are a practical choice. My current car is a Peugeot 307 that taught me that a car doesn’t have to be big to offer space and comfort.

Let it be noted that I’m not a car fanatic, nor impressed by showy luxury limousines, while I am positively bored by car racing.

I agree with you Katz. Not at all interested in racing or the things associated with it. Also, have always had popular cars. For me, a car is a means of transportation, nothing more. That said, I do enjoy my creature comforts - when I travel by car, I want luxury and I want a car that can be serviced wherever I happen to be in the USA, so I drive a 2014 Chevrolet Impala.

Katz, I used to own a 505 .... big car, powerful engine... comfort... nice! but not economical.

I agree with both of you with your comments, the DKW was *not* a good car given the scarcity of parts. The Toyota is much better given the availability of parts however, that is changing given that this model is 30 years old now.

Up until a few weeks ago, my *car* was a Ford... I am in the process of looking for a new car... but decisions decisions.... its not easy

It could be worse you know.... when he was alive, my father swore by the old Skoda "Treka" model... a European "car"...

Parts were not easy to acquire, given that at the time, it was from a Communist nation and New Zealand was so very far away from any decent supply of parts (new or used)....

When travelling by car, comfort is the word that should be used.... the cars mentioned here were only ever "hobby" cars....

Though I'm not familiar with current models, if you're looking for a new car, a compact Toyota hatchback would never be a bad choice.

My very first car was one of these a 1937 chev sloper, had a phone book & a cushion on the seat so I could see over the top of the dashboard & blocks of wood on the pedals so I could depress them all the way.

Nope no jesting I bought it in 1973 it was sitting in the front of a wreckers yard for sale $1,500 bucks with a 3 months registration on it It was a fawn brown colour with rust patina on outside top of the doors & various other places, I bought it cuz it reminded me of a car that my gramps had back when I was a young snapper.

I only kept it for about 6 months though & sold it again for $3,250, apart from that I've had up to about 50/60 cars/motorbikes so far of various makes & models.

My first motorbike was one of these a B.S.A. bantam 125 cc which I used as a paddock bike...paid $120 for it, I bought it when I was hmm about 14 or 15 years old. It had a nobby tyre (Dirt trail tyre) on the back which had burned a brown mark around the sides of the rear mudguard. Ofc it wasn't in as good a condition as the one in this pic but it went very well just the same & I had a lot of fun on it.

One of the cars I owned when I was a teen was an old Austin A10 ... complete with running boards and flat 4 motor... I paid $100 for it...

These days, they sell for upwards of $20,000 or more, depending on the condition... old VW's and the famous Moris Minor.... wow... if you can sell one of the Minors... you could maybe buy two houses with the proceeds...
