The Blind Pilots
A full passenger plane sits on the runway. The door opens.
The captain walks down the aisle. He wears dark black sunglasses. He taps a white cane on the floor to feel his way forward. He bumps into a seat. He finds the cockpit door and goes inside.
The passengers look at each other in shock. Panic starts to spread.
A minute later, the co-pilot walks down the aisle. He also wears dark black sunglasses and taps a white cane. He navigates into the cockpit.
The worry turns to pure terror. People begin to whisper and sweat.
The flight attendant comes onto the loudspeaker. Her voice sounds calm and sweet.
"Ladies and gentlemen," she says. "As you might have noticed, your flight crew today is legally blind. But please do not worry. They use the most advanced navigation systems, and this captain has more than 6,000 safe flights behind him. You are in very good hands."
The engines roar to life. The big jet starts to move down the runway.
The plane rolls faster and faster. It goes very fast, but it stays on the ground.
Half the runway passes by. The plane is still on the wheels.
More runway disappears. The end of the pavement comes up fast. The fence at the edge gets closer and closer.
The passengers panic. They scream in absolute fear.
At the very last second before the grass, the nose lifts high. The plane shoots up into the air and clears the fence by inches.
Inside the dark cockpit, the captain wipes sweat from his forehead. He turns to the co-pilot and shakes his head.
"Whew," the captain says. "You know... one of these days, the passengers are going to scream too late. And then we are completely dead."
