Support for older versions of Internet Explorer ends Jan 12, 2016

Microsoft has just announced that beginning January 12, 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical supports and security updates. Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, and will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

Microsoft encourages customers to upgrade and stay up-to-date on the latest browser for a faster, more secure browsing experience.

Boo Hiss. The last time I upgraded to IE 11, a large portion of my stuff stopped working. I shan't be upgrading again. Besides I use Firefox for most everything. There's only one website I visit that requires IE and I can stop going there. Screw Micro$haft.

Not to worry unduly. I’m still on IE8, and Windows XP to boot, and nothing happens to me. It’s now over a year-and-a-half that MS stopped all updates. And this despite all ominous predictions by the web’s Cassandras repeating each other and considering themselves as experts. Of course, I only use the IE very rarely and on safe sites.

Mind you, the system itself uses some IE components, so you cannot uninstall it, even if you’re not using it. As regards the effect of not updating these system components, that’s an interesting question. But again, I don’t expect anything dramatic to happen.
