Smart gun only fires if user is wearing a special watch

Firearm safety is a big issue. People have to keep guns out of the reach of children and keep unauthorized users from getting their hands on weapons. A new handgun has turned up in California that is one of the first smart guns.

The handgun is called the Armatix iP1 and the only way this weapon will fire is if the user is wearing a special accessory watch. The company that makes the smart gun uses a special RFID chip inside the accessory watch.

If the gun is stolen, it won't fire unless the watch is taken with it. And it can’t be used against its owner.

Another firm called TriggerSmart is working on a smart gun system that uses a fingerprint scanner on the grip.

The gun sells for $1399. The watch isn't included in that price and sells for $399. For comparison, the Glock pistol sells for only $600. So safety has its price.

So.. you gotta wear the watch to bed with you? Or when you take a shower? Intruders can break in at those times too.

And I'm sure that eventually it will get hacked. Probably has a backdoor code that the Govt. could use to disable all of them at once.

Can you imaging the watch you would have to wear to fire that thing?

If its anything like engine immobilisers...well, easy way of disabling that...either take the immobiliser out or bypass it lol....the gun would be no different. Mores to the point who the hell is going to pay that sort of money for a gun, when they can go to most street corners and buy a gun for a lot less :headhurts:

Here's a scenario for you: steal watch, steal gun. Kill someone while wearing the watch. Frame original owner for murder. How do you prove the original owners innocence??

He reports it stolen. (And possible alibi). The situation isn't much different from a normal registered gun being stolen, except that it's more difficult to steal both gun and watch, unless the owner is stupid enough to keep then at the same place.

But in the last analysis, the owner of a gun does have some responsibility for a gun involved in a crime, for allowing it to be stolen. In the army, you can be court martialled and dishonorably discharged for this.

Here's a better scenario....kill owner with gun whilst he is wearing watch and holding gun....all done and dusted without stealing anything
