Just wanted to let you guys know that I had my first issue with cable extenders you know the ones for your power supply that plug in your motherboard and graphics card that have cool colors and make your case look cool.
I've been doing some light overclocking lately and have been monitoring hwinfo and I noticed something pretty scary that my 12 Volt rail was dropping to 11.5 volts (during gaming) and it also wasn't going any higher than 11.8 volts. And then during a stress test (OCCT) it dropped all the way to 11.4 volts and the computer shut off randomly shortly after, at first I thought it was because I had set a bad undervolt on my GPU which I had just done but the graphics card has a little led light on the power connector and one of them was red. And the computer didn't want to turn back on until I cleared cmos so I was legitimately starting to think that my power supply was going bad.
I don't know where I read it but someone was saying something in a forum about power supply extension cables could cause an issue so I said let's give it a shot and see what happens so I removed the power supply extension cables from the 24 pin connector and lo and behold my 12 Volt is now measuring 11.952 volts and after gaming it dropped to 11.88 volts at its lowest.
I've had these colored extender cables in my computer build for the last four years and I have never tried overclocking my computer until now so I guess this whole time I've just been running with **** voltage. I don't think I'm going to ever use these extender cables ever again so just beware if you are going to get extender cables make sure you get reputable ones if none at all.
I just removed the remaining cables (8-pin CPU, and both PCIe 8pins) and now my 12v deviation is 11.976v (highest) and 11.952v (under stress test). What a difference!
