Need to get the oil and gas in it but for the most part it's assembled.

he wouldn't want his garden to fall without fancy lights in the dark now would he ^^, god forbid his sprinklers wouldn't come on either or he wouldn't have the power to come on Dirtywarez to gloat about his garden ^^
 
Its not just about gardening - what if he needs to build a patio table and the power goes out while he's cutting a 2X6 with his miter saw? generator to the rescue! or what if he's playing angry birds and... well... you get the idea. :)

No, not the garden while its in the garden, after it's put up and have two deep freezers full of food is when we want to prevent loosing it. Call it insurance against this crap, happening a lot here lately and were right in tornado ally during the summer.

And I'm also thinking about winter months, has been particularly harsh here this year sometimes going into the teens for daytime highs. My mom is 77 years old so I'm thinking about heat and we have two propane gas logs, one has a blower on it so that will keep two rooms warm :thumbsup:
 
OK. The best way to ensure that no power cuts occur is to be prepared for them.

Exactly, that's the reason for the generator. Think of it as insurance, its there if its needed in case of a disaster.
 
Nope, that's not what I meant. It's not there in case it's needed, when it's needed it won't work. It's there to ensure that no power cuts happen in the first place. Like carrying an umbrella ensures that it won't rain, while leaving it at home attracts rain.

Why wouldn't it work when needed?

It runs on Gas you do know that? :harhar:
Its a gasoline engine

And your not going to run this constantly.
Start it up, keep refrigerators and freezers cooled and turn off.

wait a sec... didn't you already start a topic called "new toy" showing off the generator? You already made us all jealous in your first topic, I would trade my girlfriend, car and firstborn son to have a generator like that! Why rub salt in the wound!?!

Ok screw it... I'm gonna go beg for change in front of McDonalds until I can have a generator like that too! Might take me a few years.... I will just say "excuse me sir, can you spare some change for a generator?" :)

b4e is right, it's a repeat or "re-generated" topic. But I wouldn't "trade my girlfriend, car and firstborn son to have a generator like that". I would, however, trade the wife, even without getting anything in return, except I ain't got one. So no generator for me. :P

I forgot that thread was down the list a ways :salute:

Anyways, about 1/4" of ice right now, were getting hit pretty good tonight so I hope we don't lose power but no need to fear if we do.

I guess having it is more "piece a mind" than anything. Other than that its going to be stored, kept maintenanced and just ready to use if needed.

Will only be temporary thing and if needed so from extension cords to the fridge and deep freezers.

Food and heat mainly what we want.

Still got electric this morning but its coming down pretty good.
About 1/4" of ice and looks like 4 inches of snow ontop of that, winds howling too so its going to drift

OK. Here's a trick to power the whole house.

1. Turn OFF the main to your house (This prevents uploading power to the local transformer when the power comes back on). Otherwise, you'll be uploading 110 volts to the local transformer which will convert it to a much higher voltage that can electrocute any lineman working on the power lines.
2. Run a double male extension cord from the generator to a wall outlet. This will power 1/2 of the house. You'll have to make this double male because AFAIK, nobody sells anything like this.
3. Obtain a piece of copper about 1/4 inch in diameter and bend it into a U shape.
4. Plug the copper U into your electric dryer's outlet - one side of the U into each of the two plug holes (don't use the ground hole, just the hot and the neutral). DO NOT TOUCH THIS COPPER U WHILE THE GENERATOR IS RUNNING !!! If you don't have a 220 outlet for an electric dryer, then skip numbers 3 and 4. In this case you will only have power to 1/2 of the outlets and light switches. This is because your 220 dryer outlet combines 2 110 circuits to make the 220 for the dryer. I suppose a 220 electric stove outlet would work as well.
5. Turn on the generator. You now have power to every 110 outlet in the house and every 110 light switch.

Now just watch your neighborhood street lights to see when the power comes back on and then follow these steps in reverse to safely unhook from the generator.

I know this works because I used to do it in Florida when a hurricane would knock out the power for days at a time. Eventually, I just hard-wired the generator to a sub panel and installed a cut-off switch to make it easier to run the house on generator power.

Actually I thought about doing just that as I have a little electrical background however I was a bit unsure if it would work. My thinking was a double male for the 220 line to the dryer with about a 10 gage cable and just use the 220 on the generator straight to the dryer.

Flip the main switch on the breaker to prevent back feeding along with any breakers I wouldn't be using just for safety.

Yep, your idea should work, too. I wasn't sure if you had electric or gas powered dryer/stove, so just did the 110 stuff.

I got some more info on another site
Something about unscrewing the meter box for safety and if there was a fire homeowners insurance would not cover the damage as this is illegal?
 
No, you don't have to do that. Just turn off the main coming into the house before firing up the generator and then turn off the generator before turning the main back on.

Never follow step 4 :? :stop: or any of this unless you are a electrician.


You can turn off the main switch on your fuseboard and run a lead from the generator with a plug on the end & power up all circuits in your house, (isolate water heater) but....
1. If the plug was unplugged from the socket the Pins are LIVE.
2. You have a 7kw generator the fuse may be 50A, if you touched the pins you could get seriously burnt or very dead :roll: Any child may unplug this :stop:
3. the cable you use isn't likely to be able to carry the current, never mind fault current so could catch on fire.

If you don't know what your doing, ie. not an electrician don't do this.

If you want some safe switching to a generator, call an electrician & your generator would need a remote start feature.

Sorry, I have to disagree. I did it this way for 15 years in Florida where we had hurricanes and power outages that lasted for days almost every other year. If you are of normal intelligence and careful, there is no problem. As for children, I didn't have any at the time, so that was not a consideration.

Not to mention you could void your homeowners insurance if there is a fire, not worth the risk.

If I were to do it, would be a 220 line from the generator to the 220 for the dryer.

Turn off all breakers including main and only turn on the breaker for the appliances I need power to.

That U in the 220 is just dangerous.
 
I would fit something like this to my supply if it failed all the time, connect the generator and main supply to it & make the generator auto start if the main supply failed

1x Enclosure, 1x 4 pole isolator, 5 x MCB, 1xRCD, 1x 4 Pole contactor nox2,ncx2, time delay relay, a timeclock to stop generator kicking in set hours.

Then if the supply failed it would auto switch to the generator and be fused correctly & comply with IEE wiring regulations.
 
Done a little digging with an electrician that lived in the neighborhood; would require some changing out of the breaker to a 40 amp breaker in the box.

Changing that also means running new 10 gauge wire because right now it has a 30 amp/ 12 gauge wire so it would be within code.

He didn't recommend doing this for something you might never need and if and when we did, might only be a day.

I've always been one to put safety first, no offense Navy but think I'll stick with extension cords.
