I don't mind if I do...
The internet is home to many fun things to look at: terrible fan art, school girl mangas about Ubuntu, and GIFs of optical illusions. Frequently, the amusing videos or GIFs found on the web involve some kind of doctoring from a computer. San Francisco-based art collective Bot & Dolly produced a video that, at first glance, looks heavily modified with CG. However, it turns out the entire thing was captured in-camera, without the aid of any CG at all.

As Bot & Dolly put it, the Box project "explores the synthesis of real and digital space through projection mapping on moving surfaces." In non-artist terms, that means the team made a cool rig using projection mapping to show that technology at this point in time has advanced so far, that all it takes is meticulously pinpointed light to make us think special effects in a video have been generated with a computer.

Box involves two large-scale robot arms waving a couple of screens around. The screens look like they’re either playing native video, or the resulting video is stuffed full of CG, but actually, the textures and scenes are created with software and projection mapping.

Aside from just having some kind of deep message about technology advancement, the rig used in Box also paves the way for more compelling live performances. Theater and concerts can have extremely sophisticated special effects to go along with the costumes and sets.

Check it below and please remember to HD the video if you can and view fullscreen:
