The question asks only "How much money did the store lose..." If you focus only on the money itself, they lost $30 as they have the $100 back. However the term "money" has not been defined in the question so it could also include purchase price of the goods bought. Additionally, the problem statement does not confirm that the $100 was stolen from the register in that store, only that it was stolen "from a store's register." I would be asking for more info.

But if you add the $30 then the cost of the $70 which may have been 20-30% less than the 70$ sales price and in most cases the tax on the sale out to the $ 70 maybe less than the $100,stick that in a math problem for the economics class

The store did not lose any money. Here's why:
  1. The man stole a $100 bill from the store's register, which means the store lost $100 in cash.
  2. However, the man used the stolen $100 bill to purchase $70 worth of goods. This means that the store received the $100 bill back as payment for the goods.
  3. The store gave the man $30 in change, which means the store returned $30 of its own money to the man.
So, in the end, the store lost only the original $100 bill that was stolen, and it received the $100 back when the man made a purchase. Therefore, the net loss to the store is still $100.
