Hitachi are the most, Seagate the least reliable hard drives

Cloud storage provider Backblaze has been looking at statistics generated from the open-source Backblaze Storage Pods powering their business. The data is based on more than 25,000 units in active service from 15 different consumer-grade hard drives from Seagate, Hitachi, and Western Digital.

For most of the last four years, Seagate and Hitachi have offered the best price-per-GB ratio, and also the starkest contrast when it comes to reliability. Hitachi drives are by far the most reliable with less than a 2% failure rate, while Seagate fared the worst with an annual failure rate of 8-9%.

Things don’t get any better for Seagate after three years with failure rates reaching over 25% while Hitachi sits at just over 3%. The annual failure rate of the Western Digital drives at around 3% and after three years of operation they fare just slightly worse than Hitachi at 5.2%.

I've had good luck with HDD as of late. Had a portable Toshiba 1GB drive die three days after warranty this year. Historically, I had really bad luck with a run of Micropolis and Maxtor drives just before they both went out of business. Funny thing is that Maxtor bought out Micropolis after it failed. I had a very large batch of the (allegedly) super fast IBMs go bad before they sold off that division to Hitachi. Was offered a handful of blank CDr's as compensation. Bastards. Will NOT use them. Don't care for the WD software and return policies, so I avoid them too.

Never used Hitachi, Always WDs. Tried 2 Seagates and both went belly up on me. So I agree 100% with that report. Seagate sux big time. Never had a WD die on me, in fact I'm still using one 500 GB one that is about 8 years old.

I also have a Western Digital 1 terabyte drive but I just happened to end up with the brand because I bought my PC as a package deal on one of those sites where you "build your own" PC and I already spent too much on the CPU and GPU I wanted so I took whatever 1T HDD they offered and it happened to be a WD.

Thanks for bringing up this topic, Its reminded me that I haven't backed up anything in a few months and its about time I did.

I've got a 1.5 TB WD that I'm using atm with no probs at all, and I have a brand new seagate 2 TB that I got on special for $89 still new in the cupboard, but don't expect any probs with it when I get around to using it.

I think I've got 6 seagates which include 2 externals and <touch wood> I've never had a problem with any of them

only time i had a problem with a seagate, was when I choked it with too much data, deleted some and it started behaving again.

A few years ago a 5 year warranty was common for HDD but some are down to one year now - they don't make 'em like they used to I guess?

I've noticed a large failure rate with the 1tb external MyPassport drives I've been buying for work, so I switched to the Seagate recently (without looking at this post first unfortunately.) I bought 12 of them. I'll see what happens and post it.
