Reminds me of my younger days fishing with my mates we used to use those old bottles they call ally bottles and we'd put carbide in them that I stole from one of my uncles and a bit of sea water, wait for it to start fizzing then throw it had the same effect on the fish but only short range, if you did it wrong and held the bottle too long you could lose a hand or worse, everything was ok for us until my uncle found us out and beat the living crap out of us.

An acquaintance of mine, Michael Enchanis, was doing sorta the same thing except out of an airplane while fleeing El Salvador. Something went wrong and they ended up feeding the fish.
