The Swiss file host has just announced that it will close down on March 31st 2015 and disappear from the web. It advises its customers to secure their data before that date. The company doesn't cite a reason for the surprising shutdown, but losing the majority of its users in recent years after the implementation of tough anti-piracy measures is likely to be connected.

Rapidshare started in August 2004 as file host und soon enjoyed enormous popularity, in fact it was for years the most popular one-click file-hosting service on the Internet.

With time, however, the service got repeatedly in trouble, because it was used for sharing copyright-infringing material..

In May 2013 the company dismissed a large part of its staff and rumors started about impending closure. But it survived for a while.

In July 2014 it abolished standard accounts and the service could only be used under payment. Apparently this concept was not received well, not least because competitors offered increasingly more capacity for free or nearly so.

My comment: I stopped using this host long ago, in fact it had practically disappeared from the file sharing scene in the last year or so. Nevertheless, I can’t help feeling a bitter taste in my mouth when I think of all the stuff I had downloaded and all the discussions I had held during its past days of legendary glory.

Rapishare is dead, long live file sharing!

Yeah, too bad about that. Back in the heyday of RS, it was my preferred upload host. At one time I had almost a gigabyte of files shared on RS. Then they got pissy and I had to delete my files. I used Hotfile for a while til they bit the dust. "Ah those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end, we'd sing and dance forever and a day."

I don't use RS if at all possible, too slow.

Now, they will be slow won't they.

RS was great when they first started, I had a nice paid account and everything, backed up my photos there, etc etc...

but then magically they deleted all my stuff when they changed some rule as soon as my account expired. I missed payment by a DAY.
Still, a good resource for stuff, gone.

They were one of the first and best file hosters ever. They are dead since 2012, but it is still sad to see them closing.

Just wondering if this is somehow related with the "SwissLeaks" scandal or if it is a coincidence only...

To me they were great until they got rid of the RS points system then they started screwing everything up

If you can believe some of the dudes over at the GFY forum the demise of RS is credited to R. King (Adultking) :lotpot:

Many years back, as the RS golden era started losing its glitter and the service started screwing its free downloaders, I wrote this poem in anger. It now seems nostalgic to me, and I take the opportunity to post it again, for the last time.

RapidShare

Damn that awful Rapidshare,
It's a shameful affair.
All this waiting is unfair
Just to get some free software!

Why they call it rapid share,
To me is neither here nor there.
You need lots of time to spare,
If you want your little share.

All this waiting to surmount,
You need a premium account.
But expenses then will mount,
And hit hard your bank account.

If you find this hard to bear,
Then don't let them give you a scare
And entrap you in the premium snare.
Just seek hosting elsewhere.

nice poem

I liked and used RS in the early days, sad to see them go.
However, many other sites exist, so file sharing still continues...

Exactly, they might as well close.
I guess they see going legit and trying to stay legal didn't work for them so bye bye. Good riddance :salute:

Oh that's RIGHT! Now I remember why I stopped using them! The points system was their backbone, then they threw it away because of that "you're rewarding people for piracy" legal issue.

That adultking is a CP king. He uploads them to sites, and then reports them. His organization is a big scam.
