I used to be 'closed minded' to the possibilities of the spirit world and used to laugh at things like this on a regular basis until I was visited by a dead relative's spirit.
When I was younger (the age of 13) my grandfather passed away. He had a heart attack and was fitted with a pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat.
About two days later the surgeons decided that he didn't need the pacemaker & decided to remove it but he died shortly thereafter.
For some strange reason during this period I refused to visit him in hospital (maybe being a teenager had something to do with it, even though he and I were close).
I of course was devasted by his death (he was more of a father figure to me than my actual father) and was wracked with emotional guilt about not seeing him before he died...
After the funeral was over, and later that evening I went to bed late and in an emotionally charged state. I was crying to myself over the loss, when I heard my grandfathers' voice.
The voice was very hoarse but it definately was his.
He called my name "Mark" a couple of times and I was freaked out by it and had to sleep with the bedroom light left on.
The following evening was the same: I heard his voice calling my name whilst i thought about the happy times that we had spent together. I felt cold even though it was summer time and felt a weight like a load of heavy books pressing down on my legs. I felt internally as if a block of ice had been placed under my back but I was sweating from the summertime heat. I was freaked out but couldn't move at all. The whole ordeal lasted about half an hour before I felt the weight lifting off my legs. No one was in the room with me at the time and I didn't see my grandfather either.
About two or three months later (I cannot remember how long exactly because it was in 1983); I had the same feelings as before. The voice was louder this time, the chills were back as was the weight on my legs and feet. My heartbeat was racing as I started to panic over the feelings. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a shadow which was the same size and shape as my recently passed grandfather. It even wore the same hat on it's head...
Purgatory isn't quite the afterlife though mark...this would be where "ghosts" stay until purification is over. So, afterlife, not sure...purgatory yes.
There is also the other possibility that the human mind may be strong enough to have said visions, smells, hearing, even touch etc...doesn't mean its really there. Its certainly a valid question but I guess that depends on whether you are in favour of the religious beliefs orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr you go back further and have beliefs in paganism or roman/greek ideology
Not to go all religious on you all here but I do believe in Christ, believe Jesus died on the cross to save each and every one of us and there is an everlasting life; the life where there is no cancer, no pain, no diseases where we will all meet again
The life in Heaven where we will all see our loved ones again.
I can relate to bmark240's story as you all know I lost my father about a month ago this week. The doctors told us his brain was pretty much gone due to the loss of oxygen he suffered and they had him on a vent, they were recommending we disconnect because there was no positive left and he was even deteriorating even with him on the vent so we made the decision to discontinue and it wasn't 2 or 3 minutes he was dead. I was looking out the 4th floor window in the hospital room when about 2 minutes later after they said he was gone; we were getting a little rain shower and all the sudden BABOOM!!!! One clap of thunder that shook the whole hospital and a streak lightning went across the sky. It still brings tears to my eye's because I know that was my dad and his way of saying I'm in a better place, till we meet again.
Thats a fair point Shorty, and I guess it depends on ones own definition of "Afterlife".
Ghosts - I would have to say I believe in, apart from having grown up in a haunted house and seen some pretty weird sh*t.. there is to many documented events of "restless spirts" over the centuries to ignore imo, but if someone hasn't experienced it then they are less likely to bellieve in it.
Afterlife on the otherhand, in my mind is a religeous belief - the likes of "Heaven" etc.. and as I personally am not religeous, then I don't believe in that side of it although I can appreciate others to. Each to their own I guess..
@ Mark;
Thats sound very similar to something I used to suffer from (and on occasions still do) "sleep paralysis" and can be quite terrfying..
EDIT
Sorry Kirk you must of posted as I was making mine: But yes that is how I perseive others to view afterlife.. Sorry for your loss btw.
I think life is far too complicated for there to be no god or "higher power", the odds are so incredibly slim that my ancestors would meet and their ancestors would meet and my parents happened to meet and there are probably millions of times in their lives where they could turned right instead of left and I would not have been born, and thats not even mentioning the 1 in a million sperm that would have to reach the egg in every single ancestor I have in order for me to exist. So in my mind, that makes me believe in a higher power - but even if a higher power exists that does not mean it will benefit us, higher power or not, we still may get just one shot at life and when we are dead we just cease to exist anymore.
But I hope that is not the case because it just wouldn't be very fair. Heaven would not be fair either. Should Hugh Hefner be allowed into the same heaven as a guy born with no arms and legs who had to struggle to survive and lived a lifetime of pain and misery? That wouldn't be fair.
My theory is this- god got bored and created life on earth so that he could experience all our lives, call it reincarnation if you must, but it's the only way life could be fair, and that is if I will one day live every life... so as you are reading this, you are actually me living a different life. And once I have lived every life that's ever existed, maybe I will do it all again.
Greeks, romans, egyptians, how far do we need to go back before religion even entered the affray on "afterlife", its not a new belief, its just been modified by the religious associations....incas, mayans had afterlife beliefs but not under the religious guise
A friend once told me that this can't be all there is; there has to be something else. Like everyone else, my time is coming so I guess I'll find out for sure.
God - nuh.
Jesus - Double nuh.
Religion - triple nuh.
Something else- maybe
Afterlife as I am - nuh.
Afterlife as a collective ready to be reborn - probably.
All of this is null and void anyway as no one here will be able to come back and tell us either way.
What dif does it make.
If you believe and it isn't there then you aren't around any more to care.
If you don't believe and there is, then it's a pleasant surprise.
Just behave as best you can in this life and take a step up the ladder in the next. Hopefully.
