Cruel Killing of Popular “Icon†Lion
Cecil, aged 13, was an “iconic†animal and a popular attraction, who was recognized by many visitors to Hwange reserve, Zimbabwe, due to his distinctive black mane. The lion was reported to enjoy human contact.
"He never bothered anybody," said Johnny Rodrigues, the head of Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force. "He was one of the most beautiful animals to look at."
Cecil was lured outside the reserve’s boundaries by bait and killed by Walter Palmer, who runs a dental practice in Minnesota and hunts big game as a hobby. Palmer first injured the lion with a bow & arrow and only next day they found him to finish their despicable job!
Walter James Palmer is believed to have paid $55000 (£35,000) to shoot and kill the much-loved lion.
Here’s the proud killer…
Dr Walter Palmer (left), pictured here with another of his kills, has boasted about shooting a menagerie of animals with his bow and arrow. He is accused of paying £35,000 to shoot Cecil the lion.
Professional hunter Theo Bronkhorst, and Honest Ndlovu, a local landowner, who had lured the lion to prepare the kill, appeared in court in Victoria Falls on Wednesday charged with poaching.
In US, protesters placed animal toys outside Palmer’s dental practice in Bloomington, a suburb of Minneapolis. The practice was forced to close as protesters staged a recreation of the hunt involving cuddly toys and water pistols.
Palmer’s Twitter and Facebook accounts and website of his dental practice were all closed after being deluged by critical comments.
