LONDON — Climate protesters threw soup over Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" in London's National Gallery on Friday to protest fossil fuel extraction, but caused no discernible damage to the glass-covered painting.

The group Just Stop Oil, which wants the British government to halt new oil and gas projects, said activists dumped two cans of tomato soup over the oil painting, one of the Dutch artist's most iconic works. The two protesters also glued themselves to the gallery wall.

The soup splashed across the glass covering the painting and its gilded frame. The gallery said "there is some minor damage to the frame but the painting is unharmed." The work is one of several versions of "Sunflowers" that Van Gogh painted in the late 1880s.

London's Metropolitan Police said officers arrested two people on suspicion of criminal damage and aggravated trespass.

sidenote: i wold like to glue their faces to the belt on my Ultra Custom chopper and do some holeshots.
and after that throw some lobster bisque in their faces. but that's just me. maybe just smack them in the face with a cheap Walmart snow shovel.

Beyond misguided. If they want to protest Royal Dutch Shell, take it to Nigeria...and volunteer for enviro cleanup efforts while there.

Otherwise, they're ISIS/Taliban wannabees.

I have no problem with peaceful protests but these aren't peaceful protests, if they throw soup over a piece of history, or faeces over a statue of a man who fought in the war and raised money for the NHS....a service that I am sure they have used many times over. Or they protested on roads blocking ambulances on emergency call out or blocking several refineries, stopping much needed fuel to those in need.

My thoughts on the subject.......they should be imprisoned until the sun explodes into a red star or worse still a black hole, take away all their rights for trying to damage a masterpiece worth £72.5 million. This situation is getting worse not better, its like the government want to encourage it even though they are trying to push through a paper on peaceful protests and how much time they may spend in the clink, however, it seems even defacing a war memorial isn't worth jail time. Makes me sick and I'm a droid
