Can anyone recommend a good novel?

Just finished Glorious Exploits.
It's set in ancient Syracuse during the Peleponese War but written in a modern colloquial style. Two out of work potters are staging Euripides in a quarry, where Athenian prisoners of war are kept in utter desolation with the actors recruited from the prisoners. It's really well paced, has crafty prose and I can only utterly recommend it.

Can't go wrong with The Expanse. It's such a good book series.

I second this. I read through the first 6 books without noticing.

I recommend Dune, best political sci-fi ever made.

A little bit older but still good. The Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison. a mix of sci-fi, crime and espionage with a good portion of humor.
If you like hard military sci-fi then try Honor Harrington by David Weber. But only the first 4 books, after that the quality declines.
I also recommend "Santiago" by Mike Resnick. A Bountyhunter searches for a legendary terrorist in the human colonized space.

You bet I can. Try The Magus by John Fowles.I learned of this novel as a tip from Tim Leary seventy years ago. He said no novel captivated him as much as The Magus and compared it to James Joyce's Ulysses for the exaltation of human consciousness.

The Passage by Justin Cronin (don't bother with the TV show, not a patch on the book)

I tried out The Passage earlier this year, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Like, I was pretty into it for the FBI agent's part of the story, but then it ended, and the leap forward in time was a little jarring, and I found it somewhat less interesting. The TV show is junk for sure, though.

OP: not what you're looking for, but the last book I read that I really liked is called Wake Up And Open Your Eyes. It's about a demonic possession that spreads through social media. It's a little like the book version of the Crossed comic, but somewhat less "gross just to be gross". There's a super interesting portrayal of the gradual possession of a family though, that was my favorite part about it.

I'm adding on to the recommendations for The Expanse. It's a lot of books, yes, but I found most of them, especially the first one, to be fairly satisfying on their own as a novel.

I love Ken Follett's books. Start with the Pillars of the Earth series and go from there.

The Long Ships By Frans G. Bengtsson and the Eden Trilogy by Harry Harrison. Also, the Riverworld series, or the Neuromancer saga are great and honorable mentions. Also also, at least the first three Shadowrunner books, Peter Hamilton’s Reality dysfunction series, and ALL Tomorrows. All great reads. Not to leave out, Terry Goodkind’s Wizards First Rule series, and Orsen Scott Card’s series Enders Game series. That should keep you busy for a few years.
