Anyone have experience with telephone wiring?

Ok guys a little background
We've had telephone service through our cable company since about 2008, no issues, cable company has been Insight communications.

Insight was sold to Time Warner (Thank you everyone I'm sorry also)
Time Warner started ramping up and switching over everything about March this year and that was when the problem seemed to have started, didn't even notice it at first due to the frequency.

Ok problem has been intermittent drops in calls when someone calls in, always the same people and they can get through 1 out of every 5 times and the other 4 times the phone would ring two times and quit, they get dropped and just clicks on their end.

Wasn't till May we even knew it was a problem for sure and the problem was on our end because 90% of everyone could get through so 1 or 2 people you think hey, our phone is fine it has to be yours. Then by June it starts getting more frequent, more drops and more people can't get through and we called Time Warner and they did something on their end and said give that a try. Had the people that were getting dropped call in and all was fine so problem solved. That lasted about a month and it starts again.

Last week we call again, they do something on their end and again, think its fixed but that was when we found out we our self could call the house phone from our cell phone and get dropped after the second ring so again, like I did in June I start disconnecting phones, troubleshooting thinking it's one of our phones but its not.

Time Warner was out this week, replaced the telephone modem and was going to give that a try but problem got worse, now the phones won't ring period, nothing at all but you can call out and you can pick up the house phone when calling in and answer the phone even though it's not ringing :whistling:

Now, I knew in June neighbors were having the same issue so I walked over across the street night before last, still having same issue as I was; ring two times and quit. So, give Time Warner another call.

They say it's internal wiring and that would be up to me to diagnose and fix
Till I said neighbors had same issue now they would have someone out that day (yesterday) he gets here and does a little troubleshooting and then plugs a phone directly into the back of the modem, it rings. Plug telephone line from modem into wall jack which activated the rest of the jacks in the house, phones don't ring

He goes outside to the telephone box, looks around, finds some corrosion and decides to redo the wiring and clean that all up. Comes back in with the wires and says you've been hit with lightning :hmmm:

The ends of the telephone wires out of the box outside are charred, says telephone lines from the box to the wall jack would all need to be rewired??? Even the two wires in the box that are not used for the phone are charred and you can pull back about five feet and get to clean copper so I'm thinking this is not charred.

Anyone run into this?

For now we have the base unit plugged directly into the back of the modem and that base has three satellite phones so we have telephones in the house.

My simple guess is that the voltage is not enough to run the whole house.
If you plug a phone directly into the back of the modem and it rings then plug the rest of the house in and it doesn't then the tech is right ish.

Simple thing is to go buy about 20 meters of phone cable from where ever and a couple of end jacks.
Wire it up with the cable just on the floor and connect a phone and the modem. Ring the home phone from mobile and check.
If it works then your wires are screwed. If it doesn't then follow the next step.

Buy a set of cordless phones. Plug the base station into the modem and then set up the phones in the rest of the house where ever you want them.
Then ignore the wires.

I have 4 cordless phones with 1 base station. Main bedroom, Kitchen, Study and Garage.
I would never go back to wired phones.

I'm fixed
I don't know what happened, something shorted under the house of someone was in that box before yesterday and moved wires that shouldn't have.

The tech that was here yesterday re-wired it under the house yesterday, bypassed the telephone box outside and yet he had wires connected that shouldn't have been (not used).

6 jacks in the house, all 6 only use the red and the green wire
One by one I used the ohm meter and tied the red and green together for each jack, came inside and put the meter to the red and green on each jack till I found which wire was for which jack then labeled that cable.

Once I had all 6 cables identified I tied all the reds together and all the greens together and I was back in business.

Phones ring and all jacks work.

But I was left with one extra cable under the house now that I do not know where that went to and that was hooked up and I bet its grounding out the phones. :stop:

Good to hear you sorted it.
But cordless is the real way to go dude.
:)

Do they make cordless rotary dial? :whistling:

Yea, ours are all cordless also, problem is we only have one of the units that came with 4 phones so the other 4 phone which are also cordless also have its own base.

So, 6 jacks but there are 8 phones. most of the jacks are not used but they are there if needed.

A link for anyone who wants to turn a rotary dial phone into a cordless. :)

Time Warner just left
I called the guy that was here Wednesday to come tie the telephone wires in with the right type of connectors so it wouldn't come apart, I had them all put together with an electrical wing nut temporarily and he started tying everything in and we rang the phone, guess what?

Yep, back in the same shape, nothing would ring :hmmm:

I thought to myself “OH SHIT” now what

He started doing some troubleshooting now that he took me at my word and it was working; the main line (which is the jack the telephone line connects to from the modem) going to the spot where everything ties in. He was getting 20 volts off that and should be 40 volts so he swapped the red and green wires out and used the black and yellow that’s in that same cable just not used, same inside the jack, just put the yellow where the green went and the black where the red went and now we had 40 volts. Tied those together and everything worked so seems like one of those two wires in that cable somewhere between the jack and where it ties in was bad.

Wasn’t lightning either, he said the charring would have been a lot worse and since I stripped the wires back to where I had good clean red copper that discoloration had to be weathering and moisture that got in the lines.
