Squire Keener lived on Cooper Creek just off of Lone Pine Ridge on the North Carolina side of the Smokies. When the park rangers came to inform him in 1934 that they had bought his land and his cabin and he had to leave the only home he had ever known for the past 62 years, he replied, "no sir stranger, best I can recollect I never put it up for sale..."
