Karma comes in two forms - good and bad. It's part and parcel of the Universal Law of Cause and Effect. For example, if you make a bad cause by hurting someone (through thought, word or deed), you immediately accrue "bad" karma which will manifest - maybe then or maybe later. Conversely, if you make a good cause (again, through thought, word or deed) you immediately accrue "good" karma. Thus, our karmic tally sheet stays with us, not only throughout this life, but from life to life, through lifetime after lifetime.
Now, one might think that our "bad" karma would outweigh the "good" karma since it's so much easier to have negative thoughts than it is to have positive ones (yes, even negative thoughts about ourselves are bad causes, adding to the "bad" karma side of the tally sheet) and ordinarily, that would be true, but we Buddhists have a way to negate the "bad" or negative karma in this lifetime. It's called the Ultimate Law of the Universe and it's name is Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. We believe that by chanting this ultimate law of the universe we can elevate our life condition from the lower worlds of Hell, Animality, etc to the highest world - that of Buddhahood and by doing so, we can become happy in this lifetime. And isn't that the purpose of life - to become happy?

Good question. I'd like to think that, karma is like superstitions and in the mind of some cultures rather than in the real world. But it seemed to manifest itself in so many instances in my life, that I'd admit to secretly believing in in, deep inside as they say.
And I'm talking about karma coming back in this life. I don't know about it being carried over to future lives, but if these exist, it seems a reasonable assumption and could explain some of the apparent gross injustices in this world.

Exactly so, and this also is a basic tenet of my Buddhism - it does explain why some people are born to good circumstances and others are born in poverty or with physical hardships, etc.Katzenfreund said:

I used to believe in karma - but too often I have witnessed worthless pieces of human garbage get everything in life handed to them on a silver platter while decent humans suffer. Although I picked "not sure" in the poll because I am taking into account the possibility that the lives we are living now could be the result of previous lives we have lived and we are now reaping the rewards of how we lived our lives then (good or bad). And I am also taking into account that karma could take time- we don't always get to witness the result of karma.. someone who does you wrong today might have bad things happen 10 or 20 years from now... when you are no longer a part of their lives.
Another part of me thinks karma cant possibly exist because some people are programmed differently then others - compassion, honesty and morals are things that some people have and some people just don't have, so how can karma punish someone who just does not have decency programmed into their brain? It would not be their fault. Example: I am driving down the street and see a dog who got hit by a car on the side of the road with 2 broken legs who is suffering- would I stop and help? Of course! But many people would just look out their window and not even care.. is it their fault they were not born with compassion for animals? Should they be punished for that by karma? Compassion, decency. kindness - some people just don't have these traits built into them.. but is it their fault?
One more thing- There is a funny TV show called "My Name Is Earl" about a guy who did bad things to people when he was young and now has a list of people he harmed in the past and wants to make amends with- just about every episode is about him trying to help someone on his list, because he is now so worried about karma. The "Earl" character and the show is based on the movie "Raising Arizona" - So if you loved Raising Arizona like I did and have never seen "My Name Is Earl" - trust me and watch it - there are 4 seasons for you to watch - and its on netflix.

I also believe that when you do someone a favour, eventually someone else will return the favour to you.

Yes, like many I believe in Karma but I also can't help but remember the phrase "no good deed goes unpunished"..
Many times in my life i've gone out of my way to help people, just to have it come back and bite me in the proverbial.
