Order a child to do some thing , he or she rebels. ask the child nicely, he or she thinks about it, give the child some chocolate, it is done emediately. some thing we should all learn from.
So what we should treat our children like pets? I don't think so. The reward system is not the answer. There was even talk at one time we should be paying our kids to go to school and this would increase attendance LOL I had to laugh.

when we work we get paid for it, usually with money, we do not usually work fo nothing ( I do some times because I enjoy what I do) so if a child does some thing for me then he must be rewarded for work done, with some thing he can use or enjoy, so the next time I need help it is there and willing to do it. As you state, children today are treated like pets, they are not taught the value of anything, because nothing as any value to them, if they break some thing they are told not to cry as a new one will be bought for them , just to stop them crying or going into a tantrum. If children enjoyed school they would pay the perents to let them go.
