ProtonMail as well as ProtonVPN (which i personally use too) have the reputation of being one of the most, if not the most secure Mail and VPN provider today. They advertise heavily to not log any IP addresses and don't forward data to third party.
This promise got a huge dent in recent events, after a French activist was confirmed arrested based on a logged IP address from this activists ProtonMail account. Users of Proton products now wonder how secure their services really are. So far it only affects ProtonMail, not the VPN service but who knows.

After this exposure, Proton CEO published a statement explaining what happened and, interestingly enough, Proton allegedly removed the "we don't log your IP address" promise from their ProtonMail website.

vpns do the same thing so if you really want to remain anonymous pay your vpn provider with a gift card private internet access vpn will take gift cards as payment
use a non transparent proxy then tunnel through the vpn or go through several
in the long run if you are really really bad agencies can request the vpn provider sniff and log activity with a subpoena whether they say they keep them or not
or so i heard ;)

Thanks for sharing. Nothing is really secure especially in the online world in my opinion
