End of an era: Winamp is shutting down after more than 16 years

Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release.
Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.

Winamp was my first alternative to WMP 10 years ago. But it kept getting heavier and slower by adding useless gimmics. So it got uninstalled and replaced by nimbler alternatives. I suspect I wasn't the only such case and that was a reason for its downfall.

Why can't they just leave a well working app alone?

Say it ain't so, Batman. Holy MP3, what will I do now? I've never used anything except WinAmp and it has such a nifty way of auto-tagging MP3s. I'm gonna go pout for a year.

wow really? winamp is the only thing I use to play music on my PC because the visualizer is totally cool and I love the skins you can use to make winamp look like a car stereo or a home stereo - If you were to click the "play music" button on my desktop right now this is what you would see: (over 1000 songs)

Winamp was one of those programs I discovered back when I had windows 95 that just blew my mind in the early days of owning my first PC... back then me and a few buddies used ICQ to trade mp3s back and forth until one of them explained IRC to me.. but when I discovered Winamp it was the greatest thing since sliced cheese...

But i will not be too sad.. Winamp will still function and I bet some people will still be making skins for it... the winamp forums will be gone (I joined on December 15th 2002) so.. I better check now to see if there are any new skins I wanna try before the site is gone.

ya winamp plays video too but for me... Winamp will always be the greatest mp3 player

That's a cool skin, b4e, functional too.

But for the time being you don't have to worry about Winamp shutting down. Get the latest version plus all the plugins you're likely to need, and that should serve you for a long time to come. But do that now while you can find them.
