More than 80 elephants and other animals have died of cyanide poisoning by poachers in Zimbabwe's largest game park, wildlife authorities said Tuesday.

The announcement came after a group of government experts visited Hwange National Park on Saturday to investigate reports of cyanide poisoning.

"When we left Hwange National Park on Sunday, the total number of elephants that had died from cyanide poisoning was 81," said Jerry Gotora, a director of the Zimbabwe parks department.

"Several other animals have also died, but we don't have the total number yet."

More than 25,000 elephants were poached last year, according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

The animals' tusks are highly sought after for Asia's ivory trade.

Nine people have been arrested on suspicion of poisoning watering holes in the game park to kill the elephants for their tusks.

However, Gotora said the poison had been "put at places where elephants graze, not in water as was being reported".

Two years ago nine elephants, five lions and two buffalo died from cyanide poisoning in Hwange National Park.

Just 50 rangers patrol the 14,650-square kilometre (5,660-square mile) park, and wildlife authorities say 10 times that number are needed.

There are more than 120,000 elephants living in Zimbabwe's national parks.

It's really sad but...
I'm sorry to take this stance but what humans do to other humans is far worse than this.
If people were just as concerned about the actions of human life as they are appalled by the maltreatment of animals then the world would be a better place.

Look at what happened in the Westgate shopping center in Kenya recently:

Terrorists shooting, raping, impaling children, cutting off testicles, pulling off fingers with pliers, gouging out eyeballs, cutting off heads & limbs & throwing the severed heads through windows, hanging people by meathooks.....

unfortunately bm......it seems to be a bit too much of a regular occurrence. Its not pleasant and very barbaric however, the world is over populated with humans and we do cause the most destruction of any species on the planet. Blowing other humans to tiny little pieces in the name of a religion or in the name of "peace" seems to be the trend. But wanton murder of animals in the name of greed is just plain wrong.

I have a simple solution.
Here in Melbourne Aus a piece of shite raped and murdered a women 12 months ago.
He admitted to doing it and showed the police where he put the body.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced with no minimum sentence, meaning he does not get a non parole period.
Just this week Legal Aid funded his appeal to the non parole part of his sentence.
Which was thrown out.
When a paper found out and published the story about him getting legal aid Melbourne went nuts.
So the Gov is going to look at ways to stop this sort of money waste on people who plead guilty.

I could have saved them all the money spent on the trial, appeal and keeping him in prison.
Take him out the back and just put a bullet in his head.

More of this and the world would be a better place.
There are way to many goodie to shoes who are all about the villain than the victim.
If there is no way anyone got it wrong then just finish it.

How do they even get a trial when there is overwhelming evidence that they did it.
Then try to tell me where their lawyers get off even trying to defend them when the plead not guilty?

After just coming back from a Safari where we observed, amongst many, these creatures in the wild and was just several kilometers away from the Nairobi Mall event I must say I am appalled.

I am told that the Park Rangers shoot on sight all poachers. Those who survive and those who do not are taken to the nearest crocodile infested river and thrown in.

It is called the Circle of Life.
